Nadal-Gonzalez US Open quarter-final suspended for the night due to rain
The US Open quarter-final between Spain's Rafael Nadal and Chile's Fernando Gonzalez at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Flushing Meadows, was called off for the night, after the rain-disrupted game was suspended twice, and caused nearly three hours of delay!
When the game was called off due to bad weather, the third seed Nadal - suffering from an abdominal injury and having recently recovered from a knee problem - was leading the eleventh seed Gonzalez 7-6 (7-4) and leading a second set tie-break 3-2.
The opening set was scintillating, and Gonzalez, apparently shaky in the beginning, won only one point in the first five Nadal service games. He lost the first four points, but Nadal floundered and let him back in with two free points on his serve on the way to 4-3.
However, later Gonzalez kept Nadal on his toes, with 6-5 up and 30-all, ripping a deep down the line backhand set point on Nadal's serve. The set on the block saw Nadal going on the offensive, saving a set point, winning the game and sending the set into a tie-break.
Despite the intermittent showers disrupting play, fans still remained on site, hoping to see the game through!
Though Nadal has a 6-3 lead in his head-to-head encounters record with Gonzalez, it will be the winner of the suspended match who will face Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro in the semi-finals.
